h5ai is seriously lightweight, but no built-in option for pre-generating the thumbnail. By default it will generate the thumbnail on the first visit, cache it, and later for new/changed files depending on the hash, there's a script to preload though it might be easier to just browse the folder yourself to trigger the generation.
