In response to Linus Tech Tip's recent storage disaster, here's what I do at home.

This page summarizes the projects mentioned and recommended in the original post on /r/HomeServer

  • BorgBackup

Deduplicating archiver with compression and authenticated encryption.

  • Take Borg for instance. It is tried and tested, and has been stable for more than a decade. While repository corruption is possible, mostly due to hardware failure, it is almost always possible to restore undismayed parts of the backup.

  • borgmatic

Simple, configuration-driven backup software for servers and workstations

  • To schedule all the bells and whistles, borgmatic provides tried and tested scripts to do backups and repository maintenance.

  • InfluxDB

Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale. Get real-time insights from all types of time series data with InfluxDB. Ingest, query, and analyze billions of data points in real-time with unbounded cardinality.

  • kopia

Cross-platform backup tool for Windows, macOS & Linux with fast, incremental backups, client-side end-to-end encryption, compression and data deduplication. CLI and GUI included.

  • Now, I said that in 2022 I would probably look at Duplicacy or Kopia, and that is still true. Borg is great at what it does, but it only supports remote backups over SSH, and personally I’ve been backing up over S3 compatible interfaces for a long time (Minio). Besides HTTPS being much faster than SSH, it also supports integrity checking in the backend instead of having to transfer data back.
