About the part with the terminal: i3 cannot find the terminal either. What can is the bundled i3-sensible-terminal script (code is here). I3 actually ships with three, one for the editor, one for the pager and one for the terminal. They just loop through a list and run the first one installed. There's actually nothing stopping you from running them in awesome, they are just POSIX shell scripts. They are public domain, so they could actually be integrated into awesome easily, you'd just have to replace the i3-nagbar command at the end with an awesome equivalent.
