Centaur tabs is nice for me after a few months of using it (https://github.com/ema2159/centaur-tabs). For my first 10 years using Emacs I just used split windows and C-x b.
To switch or open new projects I use ivy-ghq which relies on the repository management tool ghq.
So what other people have mentioned, I mostly use recentf or a project based search via find-file-rg used via the selectrum interface. Then I use winner-mode to switch between previous open buffers. This covers in my case most of the use cases.
