I also had this problem. I ended up making a tool to download video from kodi addons, as well as some actual kodi addons (oh ! And a server for these too. That use a complete rewrite of the Kodi python API. That was fun). (https://github.com/marius851000/kodionline, if someone is curious. I sandboxed python call, too, so I could in theory just put that on a web server and serve it).
