Did you try a simple toolbar inside your layout at the bottom + setting it as action bar + enabling overlay mode for action menu inside your theme and then starting the action mode? Not sure if the action mode respects the toolbar position in this case... if not, there's a custom aolution you can try, its called https://github.com/afollestad/material-cab I never tried it though I just stumbled upon it once...
