lichess.org has great puzzles, learning tools, and matchmaking (some people only do chess puzzles for their brain).
Now you have a good intro to figure out if you like it or not. If you do then it would be time to figure out what kind of programming you want to get into. If it's web development, then something like the odin project would be a good option. There are other online programs for specific other things you may want to get into like data science, mobile app development, desktop development, etc. But a well rounded set of classes on basic programming and computer science fundamentals on coursera/udacity/edx/etc plus some specific books and programs towards a desired career path can be done for free or very cheap.
Aside from what everyone else has mentioned, if you don't want to go straight from a beginner's course to open source software development, a good option is to do "gamified" programming exercises on sites like codewars.com and hackerrank.com
