It's a great question. I think this is a common issue where on the one you want some customization and templates, and on the other, it is at the end of the day part of a bigger system called notification infrastructure. There is an OS library called Notifire, that addresses both the templating issue, as well as the email providers, as a small plus it makes a unified API. As a disclaimer, I am a maintainer.
