  • vscodium

binary releases of VS Code without MS branding/telemetry/licensing

  • I'd recommend against Snap and Flatpak, the native version works much better on any distro. Do note that Arch-based distributions come with multiple package options for different VS Code distributions. Use code if you want the FOSS-distro from the Arch community, vscodium-bin if you want VSCodium, or visual-studio-code-bin if you want Microsoft's proprietary Visual Studio Code distribution.

  • openvsx

An open-source registry for VS Code extensions

  • Do note that only Microsoft's distribution supports the Visual Studio Marketplace and their proprietary services like Settings Sync. The FOSS distributions use Open VSX as the extension registry, which supports most FOSS extensions (but proprietary ones are missing, such as Remote: SSH, Pylance, C/C++ etc. In some cases, there are good FOSS you can use instead.
