Haven't tried this either but there is an alternative launcher known as the Heroic Games Launcher that might cooperate with Steam better?

The best solution I found was using OSOL (Origin Steam Overlay Launcher). It works with any Launcher, you just put the OSOL executable into the game directory, launch it once to set it up, and then add it as a non-steam game.
