That said, modern distros like Doom and SpaceMacs successfully make Emacs look more "modern". Also see the excellent NANO Emacs theme (https://github.com/rougier/nano-emacs).
If I bought a piece of software in the 80s, it worked forever.
If you want a "modern" version of Emacs that "works" out of the box, I would recommend using a distribution like Doom Emacs or Spacemacs. I personally have never used Spacemacs as a daily driver, but it seems to look more modern. Doom Emacs is faster, and more minimal. Depends on your choice.

Org Roam for notetaking; Gives you a similar experience to Roam Research, which is paid and proprietary.
Any modeline (Doom, NANO)
A set of better themes (Doom themes is my favorite)
A good dashboard
A completion program (ido, ivy, helm are the main three; I prefer ivy, mostly because if offers other tools like swiper)

I'd say the best candidate is probably svg-lib, but it will take some time before it's properly adopted (if it's ever adopted).
