I don't think they're the same idea at all. button.el is a way to attach a piece of code to run when a certain action is taken (e.g. clicking the button). pbui at the moment is more akin to the mark/execute pattern than it is to button.el. (Although some of the TODO items could add other modes of interaction, too.)
