Free software usually is just some guy's passion project, funded by the FSF, or funded by user donations. Not a business. Check out signal's licence agreement or if you're to lazy to read through a legal document you can watch this video.If signal tries exploiting you, you are absolutely free to go to the source code, take out the exploit and redistribute your modified version of the software under the same licence. And if you don't have the skills to do that someone else in the community will and you can bet that they will take out such an exploit in no time.
Take back your freedom and start using free software like signal but there are plenty of alternatives. Personally, I'm keeping a very close eye on the matrix protocol and free software that comes with it.
