I've created the mu4e thread folding package (https://github.com/rougier/mu4e-thread-folding) which works nicely but is a bit slow because there are a lot of information that needs to be stored in several overlays and the code has become a bit complex.
I've uploaded my current mu4e configuration at https://gist.github.com/rougier/5886fe306fc5d43a0be94bd1a090bf58. You'll need nano-theme, svg-lib and ts by /u/github-alphapapa

It's a UI library. It's described in the section "Abstract Display" of the Elisp manual. It's used in Emacs in, e.g. vc-dir, and I use it in Ement.el, but it doesn't seem to be widely known. I've come to think of it as a hidden gem among Emacs's libraries. It's simple, but it's well-designed and greatly simplifies some common UI paradigms.
Also, here's a WIP taxy-ewoc library that I started: https://github.com/alphapapa/taxy.el/blob/wip/ewoc/taxy-ewoc.el It basically works, but it's using nested EWOCs, which is something I haven't tried before, and I'm not sure if I'm doing it quite right, so there are a few rough edges.
