Is it possible to make an embedded bootloader that can be used to both load and debug code in a microcontroller? Just wanted to avoid using a fancy/expensive debug tool that wouldn't work with a newer line of chips

  • blackmagic

In application debugger for ARM Cortex microcontrollers.

  • It's pretty common to use a second chip for this though, you can embed a number of tiny chips that support something like Blackmagic probe on to act as debug bridge. https://github.com/blacksphere/blackmagic/wiki

  • dwire-debug

Simple stand-alone debugger for AVR DebugWIRE chips connected directly to an FT232R/CH340/DigiSpark/LittleWire on Linux or Windows.

  • InfluxDB
