  • When I had intermittent problems with Comcast, I ran prometheus with blackbox_exporter (to ping a number of hosts every 10s) and surfboard_exporter (to show signal strength; only applicable to cable modem). Take a traceroute and add all the important routers to the list of hosts to ping. I discovered that the signal strength of one of the channels went down every time there was an issue. I never found out whose side the problem was (Comcast or mine), but when I downgraded to an old cable modem that uses different channels the problem went away.
