This has also been discussed at length, and I've written a pretty comprehensive (and a bit speculative) blog post about it. And of course I'll add the note that based on user feedback we've already merged an improvement to AppCenter that will direct folks towards Flathub while maintaining the clear boundaries of what's provided and supported out of the box versus a third-party source of software.
