Embox (https://github.com/embox/embox) is a configurable open-source RTOS. Its main idea is to use Linux software everywhere including MCU or develop software in a convenient environment. In other words, you can use wished Linux software without "heavy" Linux kernel therefore you need small resources. In the article, libmodbus is used on STM32F4-discovery.
