Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question, but have you considered org clocking and then some sort of visualization like org-analyzer? You point it to your files and it'll make a nice chart and overview.
for reading, I'm currently trying to set up elfeed and come sort of capture like grasp. My idea is to use org-mode to also log those things (kinda) effortless.
I'm using ActivityWatch so, when I forget to start or end an org clock, I can check when I stopped working. Thanks for your suggestion!
