Quake 1 and 2 are both pretty good experiences, even by modern standards, but unfortunately you need to install sourceports to run them well on modern hardware because they were designed for like, Windows 95. I reccomend Quakespasm for Quake 1 and Yamagi Quake II for Quake 2. You'll of course need to buy the original games from Steam or GOG or something to install the sourceports, but they're only $5 each.
If you want to play multiplayer, you actually need to install different sourceports than for singleplayer. For Quake 1 the most common option is nQuake; I unfortunately don't know what the most common sourceport for Quake II multiplayer is off the top of my head.
