  • After that, you want an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) which is a souped-up text editor especially for writing code. (Notepad is a last ditch choice, but you can use it in a pinch.) There are a lot of IDEs out there. Try Visual Studio Code: https://code.visualstudio.com/ It's free and has a Rust plugin you can install.

  • For a super mega beginner wanting to learn Rust specifically, I would direct them to tourofrust.com first. This will give you an environment to learn in without having to worry about 95% of your questions to start with. As someone would would admittedly not be satisfied with that solution, I would maybe encourage you try something with fewer steps to getting started, like Python. But because you’re here, in the Rust sub instead of r/learnprogramming or the like, I’ll assume that isn’t the advice you want either. In which case, because I avoid Windows if I can help it and have no idea what that install process is like, I would recommend creating a Linux virtual machine to try installing and learning Rust on. I remember the Rust installation on Linux being fairly easy, and with a virtual machine you can easily retry the process if something goes wrong using snapshots.
