By the way, if you're using Mac, libnotify won't work. I believe that's just for Gnome. Maybe you can use Growl? I don't know. I haven't used Mac in a long time, so I'm not sure if that's still a thing. There are a few gems you could possibly use for that if it still works.
There are some good answers here that explain what cron is, but you might want to look at the whenever gem for managing cron jobs. This lets you define cron jobs in Ruby instead of dealing directly with your crontab file.
