The above should work since I can run it in a subshell separately from my "main" environment. But I find it a bit hacky. And to make matters worse, I also need to interact with the clusters using the Go client libraries. When creating the client I can pass the Kubernetes configuration file as a string but I also need to configure the aws cli credentials and this part isn't running in a subshell so I'm not sure how I can do this in a thread safe manner.
