There are a few more recent forks of react-native-unity-view, which fix compatibility for newer Unity versions and also a new one called react-native-unity-play. IIRC one of the biggest issues with the original one was, that you couldn't quit the Unity player after you're done using it and it would keep taking up memory.
You should be able to communicate between React Native and Unity using postMessage() and addMessageListener(). Here are some more forks of the original f111fei/react-native-unity-view, some of them have better documentation:
