Vertico is an even ligherweight solution than Selectrum and gives you the bare minimum. I've been using it for a few days and it's been excellent. I'd say start with either Selectrum or Vertico, and then you can switch to Ivy if something's not to your liking. As it stands, you'll experience less janky behavior with either Selectrum of Vertico (in my experience) and so might have a more pleasant time.

Some other "upgraded versions of commands" are listed here: https://emacs-helm.github.io/helm/#helm-applications. See that many of the descriptions say "enhanced". For example, Helm's version of find-file is described here: https://github.com/emacs-helm/helm/wiki/Find-Files.
Helm commands only work in Helm. Ivy and Counsel commands only work in Ivy. Consult commands work in Selectrum, Vertico, Icomplete Vertical, and maybe some other interfaces. That's all I meant. Of course, that only matters if you don't wish to use Helm or Ivy.
