Can You Program the System76 EC to Do This?

I have been considering getting a System76 laptop for my next machine, for many reasons but I was tied between Purism and System76 and... well Purism makes good concepts but it not reliable or even safe from what I have been reading. I have a few questions, but the main one I have been researching is, and I know this is kind of an odd question, can you reprogram the System76 EC so that the caps lock is escape when you tap it and control when you hold it? I know this can be remapped inside X and Wayland, but if I could just set this in the firmware it would save me a lot of trouble. I have looked at the System76 GitHub for the EC and did find this documentation on programming the keyboard, but didn't see anyone doing anything like this in their configs so thought I would ask,
