The comment here, further linked by StackOverflow, discusses a workaround, which works; but it raises interesting questions.
Dependency in question. This worked fine for CRA until I changed my ESM bundle to use .mjs, now it requires react-app-rewired. 🤔
This is interesting because it looks like CRA supports mjs from their Webpack Config
