I had the idea of streaming Shairports output to a Cast enabled device. After some research I found a tool to do exactly that. I‘m setting up a WSL instance and try it now. Sadly, it seems the project was abandoned, but if it works, a Pi Zero could be enough to enable casting. I’ll report back :)
I've installed AirConnect on my Pi and it's working great so far. I can even pause and stop playback from my Home Mini. (Skipping doesn't seem to work). Even groups work. (For those interested, it should also support other devices like older Sonos speakers).
