I wrote some pi pico code to interface the max7219 but it's extremely optimized for the pi pico (uses DMA and programmable io features) but you could use it or something else as an example of how the interface works and is subtly different from spi. https://github.com/jamon/pico-max7219-8x8-led-matrix

    A replacement for Arduino's LedControl library

    I use LedMatrixDriver instead for my ESP32 Stock Ticker. Maybe give it a try instead.
