I don't know of any other way of doing it. I use vim in tmux all the time. If you're going to start regularly using vim in tmux could I suggest you check out Chris Toomey's vim-tmux-navigator which is a simple plugin and some tmux config for seamless navigation. I find this this invaluable everyday.
