FWIW you (as well as /u/cottagepainter and /u/lastchansen) convinced me to add herbe support to qutebrowser, now in the dev branch (to be merged once my todo list is finally done)
I have been looking at herbe for some time, but never really had any reason for notifications since most of the information is in my dwmbar.
I'm currently working on integrating native notifications into qutebrowser - I mainly use Dunst myself and did a fair bit of testing, but it'd be good to see what people actually use.
Ugh, version 1.0 of the spec was superseded in 2011 or so, but apparently the update didn't make it into an awesomewm release so far...
