Yeah, AV cables used with a Pi are supposed to be wired so that from top to bottom of the 3.5 mm connector, the rings are left audio, right audio, ground, and video. iPod and Zune RCA cables are already wired this way, but if you can't find one, you can get away with using one like this, which is what I use. You just have to swap the yellow and red ends. As for getting a CRT-friendly output, this is what I used. It was a pretty simple process for the most part.
