I wonder if there are less aggressive word processors that may be more helpful. LibreOffice has a word processor that behaves very much like Word, but it's open source so you can open it up and see how it ticks or even modify it to make a word processor specifically set up for programming while keeping all of the features you want.
This is where I ended up after about 3 hours or so (I don't code in python very often, if that's not obvious).
It's done! Yes, it probably has bugs. Yes, the code is bad. But it's working. You can find it here.
