Yes it can produce results without the adapter sequences. But if you want to remove adapter sequences from your reads: 1) Find out which library prep kit and adapter sequences were used to create the library. 2) If it is common adapter sequence like TrueSeq you can find the adapter sequence file TrueSeq-PE.fa in the trimmomatic github page. (https://github.com/usadellab/Trimmomatic/tree/main/adapters). Or you can google it, illumina has a website that you can find all adapters. Then you need to download adapter sequences to your working directory. Also I suggest reading the documentation of trimmomatic for other paramaters. For adapter removal, trimmomatic paper contains detailed explaination for the algorithm.
