In fact, it turns out the alsaequal is also really just a LAPSDA plugin host, using the CAPS Eq10 plugin. The alsaequal author wrote their own plugin host because "the LADSPA plugin included with alsa doesn't allow for real-time controls" (from their github readme). And someone else started from this made an alternative generic LADSPA plugin host called alsa-ladspa-bridge.
