If you haven't already, I suggest taking or at least auditing a numerical methods class. Ironically, it's largely not parallel, but the single biggest contribution to computational efficiency I've personally experienced came from implementing a multigrid solver and using it in lieu of mldivide/backslash operation. Not sure what you're working on, but if you're at all involved in finite element analysis, I'd argue this repo (and the corresponding paper) have the most accessible implementation and discussion of multigrid methods.
