Fam, quick rant about setting up my staking validator. It's a disaster. I am close to giving up, please cheer me up. So a couple of months back I really wanted to dive into staking. I was looking into services like AllNodes, but ultimately I told myself I should really not take any shortcuts and become a home-validator. I started reading deeper into the topic and came across this guide: https://github.com/trevhub/guides/blob/main/Cheapnode.md Perfect! I bought the exact same used machine and exact same SSD and RAM, but it just wouldnât work. For some still unexplained reasons the BIOS (which I updated to the latest version) would not want to recognise the SSD. I even found a guy on Fiverr and we spend two full afternoons trying to remotely trouble-shoot this thing. But it just wouldnât work. I told myself that I just wanted to be a cheepass with this refurbished hardware and decided to double-down. I bought a new NUC and installed Dappnode on it. Yay! But then some practical issues arose. I have the option to let the machine run in our apartment, although this is not ideal, because we not have a dedicated office space within the apartment. Nevertheless I planed on simply placing the NUC below the sofa next to the wifi repeater, but I soon figured out that we have just one Ethernet outlet the the whole apartment. No problem thought and bought a Ethernet cable splitter to plug my NUC in. But this solution did not work. For some reason the Ethernet cable splitter is unable to do its job. Grrrrrr. New attempt. I went to our familyâs office close by and thought I could just run it from there. But no. I set up the Wireguard connection, but it just works from the same internet connection, i.e. from the office. I cannot access if from my apartment. People on Discord are friendly and responsive, but the input from the Discord member is â check your portsâ. It is great but not exhaustive. I checked the Ports and it there is an error message saying âUPnP as disabledâ. I watch anther youtube video finding out what that means, and head back to the office, trying to fiddle with the router settings. But darn. the router access has been changed by the external system admin, I am unable to access it. another dead road. All this just to tell you that I have spend probably 2000 USD and about a total of 30 hours on this and am no were near to have my validator running. At one point I will have to sent 50 grand to this thing but my confidence is really low right now that this will ever work out for me. All this just to say.. home staking is hard. đ
Yes, it's gotten better. I don't recommend pairing with nimbus until this issue gets fixed or prysm until something is done to reduce the amount of time it takes to recover from being offline for a day or more.
