Quriosity got the better of me, so I've abandoned my own 'big project' (in Python, link here) before finishing it, now learning Haskell instead. I justify it to myself by saying it's now in a state where I can easily come back and add content to it bit by bit, whereas learning a totally different language requires concentrated time investment that I might not have again until next year. Realistically it's just an excuse for following blind curiosity, though. One day I'll get back to it and push it up to your level... One day.
If you want a more FP language on the Lua runtime, you might be interested in Fennel. I wrote a post about adding Fennel compiler to a hslua interpreter a while back, which might be useful for you.
