VLC is a must on Windows if you need to play DRM-protected DVDs or videos encoded in HEVC.
For our Mac friends in the PCMR, do yourself a favour and switch from the prehistoric QuickTime to IINA. It looks and behaves just like QuickTime, but is based on modern versions of FFMpeg and is open-source.
You can use mpv (I use mpv.net as GUI) since IINA is just based on it.
You could also install any DirectShow codec. Such as LAVFilters. (https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters)
