Unfortunately, MediaTek wireless isn't very good on Linux and if it's at all possible, I would replace it with an Intel wireless card. As for alternate drivers; the only one I could find (that isn't just a backport of the in-kernel one) is this, but it makes no mentions of additional features, let alone better roaming support; so I'd pass.
