    Overwrite is a program that overwrites empty space on disk.

    • The only way to completely remove traces of your old data is to replace it. Meaning that you fill up the drive with different information so the blocks holding your previous data get overwritten. There's software that will also do what's known as a "zero fill" which basically overwrites all data blocks but you can't do that from within the OS as you can't overwrite the OS files while it's being used.
