If you try C and don't like it, consider looking at Rust. It holds a nice position between C and OO languages like C++/C#, and is regularly number 1 on StackExchange's most-loved programming language lists. Do the Rust By Example tutorial, and refer to The Book for deeper references. I'm not a "rewrite everything in Rust" sort of person, but if my work pivoted to Rust then I would not be unhappy.
If OP thinks C is difficult, Rust will give him a huge headache. I'd suggest looking at Zig instead.
