I use FileBrowser. :) It's just a frontend for your local storage and reflects changes immediately. It also shows symlinked folders and files as real ones, so you can just make a link to your external drive or shit.
Did you use a proper database for your Nextcloud (like Mariadb/Postgres) or SQLite ? Did you also use Redis ? If not, that's likely the reason it was slow. I suggest you try again, and use Mariadb+Redis. A basic install using Docker is here. For public internet access, I suggest you use a reverse-proxy in front, such as traefik or nginx. I suggest you use Docker, maintainance is easy with it, upgrading Nextcloud is automatic if you add containrrr/watchtower, and reinstalling Nextcloud in case of a bug/error is really easy, much easier than with a typical installation on your server directly.
