You absolutely can..!! Check this project on Github i3-gnome. This is what I use to integrate i3 and gnome. There's an AUR package for the same too if you use Arch. Just make sure to read the project wiki to correctly set it up.
Isn't that sort of what Material Shell is/was trying to achieve?

- I'm a tiling WM user but the concept of the scrolling window managers were new to me. This idea might be experimental but using it was fun. If you want to try it, CardBoard is a good start. I had fun using it for a couple of days and thought it's good to share it with you too.
