  • I too made the move from using Linux exclusively for 20+ years to MacOS about a year ago. There were a lot of hurdles I had to overcome before I got used to using a different OS as my daily driver. One thing I will suggest is that you try to use any of the built-in applications first before trying to use other applications that you are used to and comfortable with. The reason I say this is because A.) Apple has just about built-in most of the commonly used programs you could possibly need, and B.) most of the built-in applications will better utilize the apple silicon and will typically be optimized to use less resources (not always though). Once you’ve given these applications a fair shot, then I would suggest installing and learning how to use homebrew. If you are a heavy cli user like myself, you’ll probably want a different terminal emulator such as iTerm2. Also, MacOS has already made the move to zsh which is great if you’ve already made that move as well, but if you’re still wanting to use bash it’s baked in as well so just tell the terminal to run it. I do suggest giving zsh a fair shot as well though. I pushed back on zsh for years when everyone was telling me to use it. My last year as a Linux user I started trying it on one shell and I could imagine going back. If you do end up trying it check out the web site ‘Oh My Zsh’

  • iTerm2
