There are several plugins to organize citations available for Obsidian, although you'd probably need to be willing to migrate your workflow (notes, citations, etc.) into it to get the most out of it.
I heard some researchers like the modern zettelkasten systems like obsidian and you can just keep the "vault" in some sync folder. I do not personally use it because I do not do enough academic writing to justify up front time investment.
I found this app called papis that seems like it would do what I want, but there doesn't appear to be a way to self host it.
