In my mind, ESXi is a decent product. As it was previously mentioned, the VMUG license opens additional opportunities for backups. Veeam Community Edition is free for 10 VMs, thus you can use it to backup production VMs (if the number is under 10). Also, using free tools allows pushing backups to the cloud like Backblaze B2. I think rclone or Starwind VTL would work it out. Therefore, you would build a hypervisor with the 3-2-1 backup infrastructure.
