redshift
Redshift adjusts the color temperature of your screen according to your surroundings. This may help your eyes hurt less if you are working in front of the screen at night.
There's also a GUI for ddcutil called ddcui if you happen to need that. There might be more unofficial ones out there, just search for "ddcutil GUI".
ddcutil is the defacto utility on Linux that can change the real brightness of monitors using DDC.

Anyway, for dimming screens with overlays (or gamma alteration), Redshift seems to have a -b option.
