  • Pi-hole

A black hole for Internet advertisements

  • PiHole is an example of a DNS server that runs on your network and does this for you. You run it on a raspberry pi (or any system, actually) and tell your router to forward DNS queries to it (instead of to your ISP), and from then on, your pihole gets updated blacklists which it cross-references whenever it receives a DNS query. If one of those queries matches a known ad host, it black holes (responds with 0.0.0.0), otherwise it forwards it to an upstream DNS server (your ISP's, or googles, or whoever you want), and those requests resolve normally and are unaffected.
