As u/w0lfwood mentioned, you can use Miryoku kMonad to try out a 3x5+3 layout on a row staggered board.
i see that there are mappings for various 60% keyboards, but not a thinkpad so you might need to make your own mapping file https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku/tree/master/data/mapping
